Unlike Wine, Ducts Don’t Get Better With Age!

It’s no mystery that new construction work is predominantly low-bid, low-quality work. This is typically through a combination of inadequately trained, or even worse untrained installers, who are often the lowest paid associates in the company, implementing the work, plus the “out-of-sight-out-of-mind” mentality of the builder or GC, who love to cut every corner possible on the truly important stuff like HVAC, in favor of the fluff that gets the buyers excited. This “cut the stuff, up the fluff” thinking plagues nearly one out of every two homeowners in some way or another, be it uneven temperatures, uncomfortable humidity levels, contaminated indoor air, high utility bills, or even potentially unsafe operations.

Ductwork Installation

At the core of the problem is the supply and return ductwork that circulates warm or cool air to the home. Generally speaking, when a new construction duct system was initially installed, we find it was approximately a 4-out-of-10 in terms of proper sizing, sealing, and installation standards. In fact, when we perform airflow testing on existing systems, we find a failure rate of 2/3’s for adequate airflow for optimal comfort and efficiency.

So, the real question is, “If the original ductwork was only a 4-out-of-10 when it was brand new, did it improve or get worse over time?” Well, I don’t think you have to be a rocket scientist to understand that it only got worse, making the consequences worse right along with it too.

Modern HVAC equipment is more advanced, more efficient, and even smarter than at any other time in our industry. Yet, more than 50% of homeowners surveyed indicated that they are either not saving as much money on their utilities as they expected, they’re experiencing uneven temperatures, and/or their sophisticated new equipment didn’t address their issues or concerns. How can this be that the equipment is better than ever, and over half the homeowners are dissatisfied in some way?

Connecting modern equipment, that is extremely sensitive to proper airflow, to old, crappy 4-out-of-10 ductwork is a sure-fire recipe for dissatisfaction. Hi-efficiency equipment is only 1-side of the Perfect Comfort Triangle required to AMAZE clients. Failing to properly address inadequate ductwork is indistinguishable to potential malpractice to a true HVAC professional who takes pride in their work. As long as you’re going to do it, why not do it right?
